DESCRIPTION:We would like to invite you to our September Speaker Session sponsored by the Inclusive Gifted Education Center at the Pacific Inclusive Research and Resources\n\nConceptualizing Autism & Anxiety\nWednesday\, September 18\n11:30 am – 12:30 pm (Hawaiian Standard Time)\non Zoom\n\nThis talk will explore how autism and anxiety intersect\, challenge common misconceptions\, and provide a deeper understanding through the lenses of the social model of disability and mental health.  Learn how to differentiate between autism and social anxiety\, and gain valuable treatment recommendations to support individuals on the spectrum who experience anxiety.\n\nThis session is ideal for parents\, caregivers\, educators\, professionals and community members seeking a more inclusive and informed approach to mental health.\n\nThis month’s session will feature:\nDr. Maya Matheis\, Ph.D.\, M.S.W.\, a licensed clinical psychologist and faculty at the Center on Disability Studies at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. She has over 15 years of experience working with autistic individuals across the lifespan. She completed her MSW at Washington University in St. Louis\, her PhD in clinical psychology at Louisiana State University\, and her pre/postdoctoral training at the UC Davis MIND Institute\, where she completed the Autism Research Training Program (ARTP). Her research interests focus on mental health needs in the autistic population and community-based implementation of interventions for autism\, with particular emphasis on training and support for non-specialists such as teachers\, parents\, and community health workers. DESCRIPTION:To register\, click here \nTo kick off the 2024-2025 school year\, the Hawaii State Department of Education\, Office of Student Support Services\, is hosting “Ka Ulana ʻAna i ka Piko:  In Weaving\, You Begin at the Center\,” a professional development opportunity focused on promoting positive student behavior and well-being. The conference and post-conference workshops will be held in person. \nDates\nTuesday\, July 16 & Wednesday\, July 17 (Main Conference Sessions). \nThursday\, July 18 & Friday\, July 19 (Post-Conference Workshops) \nTime \n8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (registration check-in opens at 7am) \nLocation \nHawaii Convention Center \nStudent behavior and well-being are the results of interconnected factors that include systems for supporting teachers and staff\, school and classroom environments\, classroom rules and expectations\, behavior management practices\, curricular/instructional interventions\, and their unique learning histories\, strengths and needs\, family support systems\, and cultural backgrounds. \nTo embody the conference theme\, “Ka Ulana ʻAna i ka Piko: In Weaving\, You Begin at the Center\,” conference participants will gain knowledge and resources about how to weave environmental factors together to help students develop and maintain appropriate behaviors\, feel safe and supported in school\, enjoy learning\, and live up to their full potential. Participants will also gain a better understanding of how students may engage in challenging behavior as the result of their individual circumstances rather than inherent character flaws\, promoting a more compassionate and restorative approach to responding to challenging behaviors that build positive relationships and lead to improved outcomes for all.
