This year, out conference theme is “It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint”, highlighting the skills families need to raise a child with a disability.  We originally planned to offer an in-person event, but were unable to secure a location this fall, so we pivoted to offering a virtual mini-conference on October 22nd.  In the spring, we plan to resume our full in-person SPIN Conference and resource fair, and will continue the “Marathon” theme.  So think of the fall and spring SPIN Conferences like one big marathon event!  And when training for a marathon, we don’t jump into running the whole race at once, we work ourselves up to it with smaller races, to build our strength and resilience.  Imagine our October conference as a “5K Fun Run”, as we learn new skills, build on what we know and prepare for “the big race” ahead of us.  Raising a child with a disability, learning medical terms, and understanding the IEP process, all while keeping our family going is like running a marathon.  It can be physically exhausting yet gratifying, emotionally challenging yet rewarding, and it can feel like you’re running alone, even when surrounded by people who love and support you.  Our workshops this fall will build on your skills around “Self-Care”, because you are worth taking care of too, “Humor & Laughter” because laughter counteracts against stress, and “Building a Network of Supports” because as we move along on our child’s journey, their supports and needs will change as they do. We are excited about these workshops and hope you are too!  These “soft skills” will help you on your marathon journey no matter if you are just starting out or a seasoned “runner” and we can’t wait for you to join us!
