Autism Learning Seminar – ABA
About: This ALS is open to all Hawaii community members! The first session of the day is designed for military families and providers. At 10:15 am, three sessions will cover the basics of ABA – the need for assessment, commonly used assessments, and choosing an ABA provider. The event will culminate in a Q&A and end at noon.

On-site childcare will be provided by Easter Seals Youth Services, some limitations may apply. Space is limited. Registration for childcare will start at 8:30 am for the Autism Learning Seminar and 1:15 pm for the Autism Journey Seminar. Parents will have to register for each event separately. If parents are attending both events, they will have to take them for the lunch hour. Child will not be allowed on the premises unless enrolled in the Easter Seals’ program.

TACA is not a licensed childcare provider and this service is not provided by TACA. TACA will be held free and harmless from and against any and all losses, threatened loss, penalties, damages, settlements, costs, charges, professional fees, or other expenses or liabilities of every kind and character arising out of or relating to any and all claims, liens, demands, obligations, actions, proceedings or causes of action of every kind and character in connection with attendees agreement with Easter Seals.

Easter Seals will offer on-site childcare services for the duration of the TACA meeting. Attendees that choose to take advantage of this service must contact Easter Seals directly to register for this service and/or obtain more information. Please note a fee will apply for these events. Participating families will need to complete an application form, photo release form and follow guidelines and policies for Easter Seals Youth Services.

9:15 AM – Updates to Tricare Insurance
Amy Wiech will debrief military families on the new Autism Care Demonstration Program that every Tricare patient is now participating in. She will review changes to cost-shares and co-pays, new clinician requirements, and the introduction of CPT codes from the American Medical Association.
10:00 – 10:15 AM – Break
10:15 AM – Need for assessment
Since an assessment guides the development of a child’s individualized behavior program, Lauren will discuss the importance and need for a comprehensive assessment when families are choosing an ABA service provider.
10:45 AM – Brief Overview of Commonly Used Assessments
Cheryl Tse will present a brief overview of several assessments commonly used by ABA providers. The presentation will cover the VB-MAPP, Essentials for Living, ABLLS, and AFLS. Resources will also be shared with participants on how to access more information on these assessments.
11:15 AM – Choosing a Provider
Anne Lau will discuss the expectations that families should have in receiving ABA services and the important considerations in choosing an ABA provider, as well as the pros and cons of different service locations.

Amy Smith Wiech, Ph.D, BCBA, is the Founder and CEO of ABC Group. She was one of the first Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) in Hawai’i and has worked with beginner through advanced learners with developmental disabilities since 1995. She maintains a strong connection with the community and generously offers her expertise to a wide variety of local organizations.

Lauren Cox, M.Ed. is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and Clinical Supervisor at Easter Seals Hawaii’s Autism Services Division. Lauren has worked with kids with special needs in both California and Hawaii since 2008. Lauren is committed to providing individualized and meaningful programs for each client that she serves and their families.

Cheryl Tse, MED, BCBA is currently a Clinical Supervisor at Easter Seals Hawaii Autism Center. She has worked with children with special needs in the home, community, school, and center setting for the past 7 years.

Anne Lau, M.Ed, BCBA, is the Clinical Director of the ABC Group clinic in Halawa Valley. She is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) who has specialized in providing intensive treatment for individuals with autism since 2004. She knows that the every child can learn and enjoys maintaining an environment where excellent clinicians are responsible for creating the best possible outcomes for children in Hawai’i- and having fun doing it!
